Résumé

The Alpine marmot (Marmota m. marmota) is a very well-known animal in the alpine countries and therefore leaves many traces in the everyday life of man. This paper gives a summary about the importance of the Alpine Marmot for people which is reflected in various spheres of life. Special emphasis is put on "trivial names", "descriptions in natural history" over a period of almost 2000 years from Plinius until Brehm, "folklore and tradition" around the Alpine marmot and its effective use in "advertising". The contribution concentrates geographically on the German-speaking area of the alps. It comprises a number of information but does not correspond to a systematic approach. Das Alpenmurmeltier (Marmota marmota) weist in den Alpenländern einen hohen Bekanntheitsgrad auf. Die vorliegende Zusammenstellung geht auf die Bedeutung des Murmeltieres für den Menschen ein, die sich in den verschiedensten Lebensbereichen offenbart. Schwerpunkte sind „Murmeltiernamen", naturkundliche „Murmeltierbeschreibungen" über fast 2000 Jahre hinweg von PLINIUS bis BREHM, die „volksmedizinische Bedeutung" vor allem des Murmeltierfettes, „Brauchtum" rund um das Murmeltier und der Einsatz des Murmeltieres in der „Werbung". Der Beitrag konzentriert sich vor allem auf den deutsch- sprachigen Alpenraum und umfaßt eine Fülle von Hinweisen, die aber keiner systematischen Betrachtung entsprechen.
